Road Bikes – Road bikes feature drop or flat-bar or upright handlebars.
The drop handlebars reduce the cyclist’s profile, positioning the rider in a more aerodynamically efficient position to eliminate drag and wind resistance. The drop handlebars are also versatile, allowing the cyclist to grip the outer and lower edges of the handlebars to reduce the rider’s profile for racing or hold on to the inner and upper surfaces for more of an upright touring position. To facilitate hill climbing, cyclists are able to pull upward on the lower drop handlebar positions making for a more forceful leg push. The trade-off for drop handlebars may be increased back and wrist strain for the cyclist gripping the handlebars in the lower drop position.
Examples of drop handlebar road bikes include the Schwinn Men’s Prelude Bicycle, Vilano Aluminum Road Bike 21 Speed Shimano, HASA R4 Road Bike Shimano 2300 16 Speed, GMC Denali Road Bike, and Diamondback 2013 Podium 3 Road Bike.
Flat-bar handlebars allow the cyclist to sit in a more upright position, reducing some of the potential back and wrist strain associated with the more aerodynamically-efficient drop handlebar road bikes. The negative of the flat-bar road bike is a larger body profile, increasing wind-resistance and reducing cycle speed.
Examples of flat-bar road bicycles include the Schwinn Phocus 1500 700C Flat Bar Road Bicycle, Vilano Performance 700C-21 Speed Shimano Hybrid Flat Bar Commuter Road Bike, and Vilano Performance 700C-21 Speed Shimano Hybrid Flat Bar Commuter Road Bike.
